Truck dangling off Boston highway causes gridlock

The incident snarled rush hour traffic for about two hours

BOSTON -- A truck with its front wheel hanging over the edge of an elevated highway in Boston created major commuter headaches.

The box truck crashed on Interstate 93 southbound in the city's Dorchester neighborhood at about 6 a.m. Thursday, injuring two occupants.

WBZ-TV's Carl Stevens shot video of the scene shortly after the crash:

CBS Boston reports that the truck was pulled back onto the highway by a crane around 8:15 a.m. Even after the truck was towed out of the area at about 8:30 a.m., traffic remained backed up in both directions on the busy highway.

State police say two occupants were hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.

Because the truck was hanging over railway tracks, the MBTA suspended Red Line trolley service between the JFK/UMass and North Quincy stations and was using shuttle buses to move passengers. The Red line service has since been restored.

Commuter rail service on some lines south of the city was also affected. CBS Boston reports that as a result, there were long lines of commuters at several stations.
