The "Mission: Impossible" actor marked the day on the West Coast with his teenage children, 17-year-old Connor and 19-year-old Isabella, and members of his extended family, People reports.
Cruise, who was just named by Forbes as Hollywood's highest-paid actor, was previously in Iceland, shooting the sci-fi thriller "Oblivion." According to the magazine, the actor had to change his birthday plans after he was reportedly blindsided by Holmes' divorce filing Thursday.
"The plan was he was going to spend his birthday with Katie and Suri [in New York City]," a source told People. "Then they were going to fly to California where he is going to finish [filming] 'Oblivion' and spend time there."
Another source told the magazine the mood on Cruise's birthday was "somber" and "very very sad."

People also reports that Holmes' split from her husband involved "meticulous planning."
"Her inner circle has been planning this and switching out cell phones since she was in China [in mid-June]," a source said. "When new cell phones arrived, then nobody could reach her. Her old best friends from last week don't have her new number, no email. She's unreachable."
Holmes reportedly told Cruise she moved into her new apartment because it had an underground garage and fewer paparazzi. Her father, Martin Holmes, also came to New York to help his daughter orchestrate her exit, firing many of the people around her before she filed for divorce last week, People added.
TMZ reports that Cruise has had no contact with Holmes, 33, since the split, but he does talk to their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, by phone at least once a day.
In other news, Holmes - who said "I'm all right, thank you," to a Daily News reporter on Wednesday - may have hinted at her decision to split from Cruise in an interview Elle magazine published in its August issue, according to the New York Post.
When asked about her husband, she reportedly told the magazine, "He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years. I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that."
"I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin. I feel sexier," she added in the interview, as excerpted in the Post. "I'm starting to come into my own. It's like a new phase."
