"The Soup" to end in December

"The Soup" is coming to a close.

E! said on Wednesday that the weekly series will air its final episode on Dec. 18; the show has been running for 22 years.

The original show premiered in 1991 and was called "Talk Soup." Greg Kinnear hosted the series until 1995, John Henson took over until 1999, passing the baton onto Hal Sparks until 2000. Aisha Tyler picked up from 2001 to 2002, and in 2004, the show was relaunched as "The Soup," with Joel McHale at the helm.

The show, which makes fun of pop culture news, earned a 2014 Emmy nom for Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program. McHale's contract with E! to host a comedy show for the channel is not up until 2016. The contract also obliges McHale's production company, Free Period Productions to give the network first-look rights to non-scripted series.

E! said the show will continue to air original episodes until the series finale. The show included a wide range of guests, like Demi Lovato, Aaron Paul and Gabourey Sidibe.

It's unlikely the show's end will slow down McHale's career: The actor already has an upcoming spot on the "X-Files" reboot on Fox.

"The Soup" posted this statement on its Facebook page:

"We've had a weird ride and watched over 11,000,000 hours of bad reality television (6,000,000 of which were E! originals) but all good things must end. Thanks to all of you for 11 great years."
