Terrelle Pryor picked by Raiders in draft

The Oakland Raiders have used a third-round pick in the NFL's supplemental draft to select former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

The Raiders announced the selection on Twitter on Monday.

Pryor will not be eligible to practice with or play for Oakland until the team's sixth game of the season. When he was allowed to enter Monday's draft, he was handed a five-game suspension by Commissioner Roger Goodell — the same number of games he would have sat out had he returned to Ohio State.

Pryor gave up his final season with the Buckeyes after an investigation into the team's memorabilia-for-cash scandal that cost coach Jim Tressel his job.

Oakland forfeits its third-round selection in the 2012 draft.

The pick was first reported by ESPN.

CBSSports.com's Josh Katzowitz says the move is not a surprise given the Raiders' obsession with speedy draft picks.

"Pryor ran between a 4.38 and a 4.41 40 during his Pro Day last weekend. While the rest of his Pro Day was uneven for a quarterback -- his accuracy wasn't that great -- his speed really stood out, especially considering he's 6 foot 5 and 230 pounds," Katzowitz said, adding that the quarterback-laden Raiders may try to move Pryor to tight end.

The supplemental draft allows qualified underclassmen who did not request early entry into the regular draft to have a chance at entering the NFL.

Some of the more notable supplemental draft picks since 1977 include Bernie Kosar, Brian Bosworth, Cris Carter, Steve Walsh, Rob Moore, Jamal Williams and Jared Gaither.

Pryor, regarded as the nation's top quarterback recruit coming out of high school, had three terrific seasons for the Buckeyes. Ohio State's career-leading rusher among quarterbacks also tied a school mark with 57 touchdown passes.
