Teen killed, toddler wounded in Chicago weekend shootings

CHICAGO - Weekend shootings across Chicago have resulted in the death of a teenage boy and injuries to at least 26 other people since Friday evening, reports the Sun-Times.

The youngest reported victim of gun violence over the weekend was only 3 years old. Toddler Jason Ares suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen at about 10 p.m. Friday in front of his home in the Brighton Park neighborhood on Chicago's southwest side, according to the paper.

Sandra Steve, the boy's aunt, told the paper that her sister and the toddler's father heard gunfire and saw a group of two females and a male walk past them outside the home. When the group reached the end of the block, the male reportedly turned around and fired, striking the boy.

Police said Ares was taken to Mount Sinai hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to the Sun-Times. Alger Sanchez, 19, and Anton Aseves, 22, were each charged Sunday with aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm and two counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the case.

The paper also reports that 13-year-old Samuel Walker was fatally shot in the head two blocks away from his home around 6 p.m. Friday in Chicago's East Garfield Park neighborhood. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six others were wounding in the shooting. Police said multiple people were standing on South Carolina Avenue when the gunfire erupted.

Loretta Young, 31, told the paper she was watching a television newscast about 11-year-old shooting victim Shamiya Adams when she heard gunfire outside her home. Her 11-year-old daughter was outside.

"I went looking for my daughter and walked past the dead boy... and two other bodies on the street," Young said to the Sun-Times. "When it is your child, you will walk through a war zone. I found my daughter, and she was okay. She ran on someone's porch."

At least 19 other people were shot in the city since since 6 p.m. Friday.
