Teen fatally shot while recording girls' brawl over Facebook post

CHICAGO -- A 13-year-old boy was fatally shot in front of his sisters Sunday night in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood in northwest part of the city, reports CBS Chicago.

Anthony Diaz was shot around 10:30 p.m. and was pronounced dead at a local hospital about an hour later, according to the station. His parents have told reporters that the fatal shooting may have been the result of a post on Facebook.

"I know my son got killed today. That's very sad. I wish this violence stopped," his mother, Laura de Domenico, told CBS Chicago.

Anthony's mother told CBS Chicago her 16-year-old daughter was in a street gang, and has had legal problems in the past, according to the station.

"She always had this problem with fighting. I always tell her not to take him, because he's not streetwise at all," said de Domenico.

The victim's family also said that he and his 16- and 17-year-old sisters went out to confront other girls about a dispute on Facebook. When he took out his cellphone to record a fistfight between his sister and another girl, another person walked up and started shooting. It is unclear whether the 13-year-old was specifically targeted.

Diaz was shot in the chest, according to the station. A source told CBS Chicago that police now know the identity of the suspect.

His parents were not sure what started the Facebook dispute.

De Domenico told the station that when her daughter heard what had happened to her brother, the response was one of retaliation.

"I'm like, 'No, you ain't getting no revenge,'" de Domenico said. "I mean, take this as an example for all you guys, teenagers, because you guys, for stupid things, a lot of people getting killed, and your brother's not coming back."

Anthony's stepfather, Ralph Otero, said his stepson was a good student and loved basketball. He says the only thing he wants for Diaz is justice.

"All I ask is for justice...I don't wish them harm. I don't wish them anything bad, but unfortunately, we're on this Earth, and we've got to pay for our mistakes," Ortero told CBS Chicago.

According to the station, friends and family gathered Monday night at the street where Diaz had been shot and announced a $1,000 reward for information relating to the case.
