Teacher accused of punching 5-year-old student in Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis police are looking into allegations that an elementary school teacher punched a 5-year-old girl, reports CBS affiliate WREG.

Authorities said they received a complaint Aug. 12, but the event allegedly happened about a week earlier at Sheffield Elementary School in Shelby County. The unidentified female teacher has been suspended, according to the station.

Further details about the incident have not been released.

In a statement, the Shelby County School District said they are also "investigating these allegations, and the teacher has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation."

Kamie Crain, a parent of a Sheffield student, told WREG she found the news "outrageous," and said she intends to follow up with her children's teachers to ensure their safety.

No arrests have been made at this time.
