Alabama burglary suspect dies after police use Taser

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A burglary suspect died Tuesday after Alabama police officers used a Taser during a confrontation with him, reports CBS affiliate WIAT.

Birmingham officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at around 3:35 p.m. on Tuesday, according to police. When they arrived to the home they encountered its owner, who said he heard glass breaking and someone yelling and "growling" in the basement, according to a police press release.

When officers walked around the house, they noticed several windows were broken, and discovered a white male in shorts wrapped in "material that looks like the air conditioner duct work," according to the release. Officers said the suspect, identified by a coroner as Danny Morel Cupps Jr., was given verbal commands but did not comply.

Officers used a Taser on the suspect several times, but he allegedly continued to resist. Eventually, he was handcuffed and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

His cause of death has not yet been determined.
