Steven Colbert's Farm Question Worth Considering

No sooner had Steven Colbert entered the hearing room for the House Judiciary Subcommittee meeting today than he was asked to leave. The place was packed. Not since impeachment hearings had so many been present quipped one observer. Colbert was there to talk about the day he spent working on a farm. A day does not make him an expert but his celebrity brought out the cameras and Colbert did offer at least one thought worth consideration: Why not offer illegal immigrants visas -- Simple, right? The truth is these are the people doing work Americans won't do. I spent a good portion of my youth doing stoop labor on farms. I was one of the few Anglos in the fields. The same can still be said at restaurants and a number of other businesses. Economic opportunity is an irresistible magnet. Surely some mechanism can be created that will allow people who want to work a way to do it without getting arrested.

Just a minute. I'm Harry Smith, CBS News.
