Son of New Mexico politician arraigned in teen's murder

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The 18-year-old son of a New Mexico politician was arraigned Sunday after being charged in the June shooting death of a teen, reports CBS affiliate KRQE.

Donovan Maez is accused of shooting at a house in Albuquerque, N.M., where 17-year-old Jayden Chavez-Silver was attending a party on June 26. Chavez-Silver, who was struck near his right clavicle, later died at a nearby hospital.

Investigators say Maez, the son of State Representative Stephanie Maez, and his friends had been at the home on June 26, when a fight broke out. Maez and others were kicked out, according to police, who say Maez and at least one friend returned to the home later that night.

Police say Maez fired multiple shots into the party through a kitchen window, in retaliation for being kicked out of the party, as well as for a resident's unpaid drug debt.

Albuquerque police officer Simon Drobik say social media accounts back up the timeline.

"You know, I'm going to call this guy a savage, because he called himself a savage in his social media statuses and his tweets," Drobik said. "They all decided to act like savages that night, get in the car, and shoot up a house that they knew there were people in, indiscriminately shooting into that residence."

Police say they do not believe Chavez-Silver was targeted or that he knew drugs were being sold out of the home.

This year alone Maez has also been arrested in two burglary cases and for possession of counterfeit controlled substance with intent to distribute. He was booked on an open count of murder, three counts of child abuse, child abuse resulting in great bodily harm or death, assault with intent to commit a felony, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at or from a motor vehicle and conspiracy to commit a first or second degree felony.

Police said there are other suspects in the shooting, but released no other details.
