(CBS) The top six dancers performed three times each  Wednesday in the countdown to the finale on Fox's summer hit "So You Think You Can Dance."

The six - out of 20 - remaining in the competition did a choreographed piece with an all-star, a choreographed piece with another contestant and a short solo. And the audience was introduced to "waack," a street-dance style to disco music that originated in clubs.

Sasha and Ricky did a waacking routine, choreographed by Kumari, and got mediocre scores from the judges who apparently wanted them to waack harder.

Ricky also did a routine with all-star Dee about a couple trying to stay together, which the judges praised for its poetry and lines, but it was Sasha who brought the judges to tears with a performance with all-star Kent about a couple whose relationship hit a wall.

Melanie also won unanimous praise for her Red Riding Hood hip-hop routine with all-star Twitch, her contemporary mirror routine with Tadd about mistaken love and for her solo, which Nigel pronounced the best he has ever seen on the show.

Tadd performed a routine with all-star Ellenore about how a single kiss can launch a great passion. It involved a number of special effects, including swinging from chandeliers. The judges said they wanted to see more dance and less drama but it was amazing to watch.

Marko and all-star Janette did a paso doble that got so-so reviews but several judges said the way Marko twirled Janette across his shoulders, as other dancers twirl a cape, was a standout moment of the night.

Marko also danced with Caitlynn to a contemporary routine about a woman in a controlling relationship that guest judge Lil' C pronounced "Double hashtag BUCK! "

In her other dance Caitlynn, clearly the weakest of the female dancers, was paired with all-star Pasha for a carnival-like samba. The judges were positive but not wowed.

Guest judge Christina Applegate sparkled behind the judge's desk but her performance paled in comparison to Lady Gaga's guest spin last week.
