Sleeping boy killed, mother injured in Detroit shooting

DETROIT - Detroit police say an 8-year-old boy has died after being shot Wednesday while in bed at a home on Detroit's east side, and it may have been a result of domestic violence.

Police say a bullet fired from outside went through a wall about 1:15 a.m. and struck the child, who was taken to a hospital and died. The boy was identified by family members as Jakari Pearson, reports CBS Detroit.

Jakari's mother also received a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, although her current condition is unknown, according to the station.

Neighbors reported hearing about five shots. Several bullet holes were visible in the bricks and a window of an upstairs bedroom at the home, says CBS Detroit.

Sgt. Michael Woody says investigators are on the right path to tracking down the shooter.

"We have a pretty good idea of who it is that we are looking for," he said. "Unfortunately, we can't talk too much about that just yet as we are in the very early stages of this investigation. We hope the community continues to talk to us and feeds us information so we can track this individual down and get him into custody very quickly."
