(CBS/WTVR) Police have taken a suspect into custody after a shooting on the campus on Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

An MTSU alert said the shooting was reported just before noon at the Business and Aerospace Building, reports CBS affiliate WTVR.

According to the alert, two men were arguing when one man brandished a firearm and shot the other in the hand.

"I was headed to Subway to get a sandwich and there was a slight argument between a taller black fellow wearing a plaid shirt and khaki jeans and what sounded like a juvenile in high school. Then I heard a shot behind me," said one witness. "There were hundreds of students around so I thought if there was a shot, that he had shot in the air."

Officials said the victim was being treated for an injured thumb. His identity was not released.

The area around the building was placed on lockdown. Officials asked everyone on campus to stay inside buildings as secured as possible, reports WTVR.

SWAT teams and U.S. Marshals were on campus with bullet-proof vests and assault weapons, searching for the suspect. MTSU campus police and deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office participated in the search.

The identity of the suspect was not immediately available.

Kyle Evans with the Murfreesboro Police Department said the suspect did not have possession of the weapon when taken into custody.

Parts of campus remained closed while police conducted a criminal investigation and search for the firearm.

Investigators have asked anyone who witnessed the shooting to come forward and speak with police.

Officials with Murfreesboro City Schools said nearby Bradley Academy and Discovery School at Reeves-Rogers were also placed on lockdown while police searched for the suspect. Restrictions have since been lifted.
