Several injured when car hits crowd outside of NASCAR race in Va.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Several people were injured Sunday when a car in the parking lot of of the Martinsville Speedway in Virginia drove into a crowd of people. 

CBS affiliate WDBJ reported that 22 people were injured around 5:40 p.m. Law enforcement received reports of pedestrians being hit by a car in a parking lot outside the speedway. 

Fans had just watched Jimmy Johnson at the speedway earn one of four spots in next month’s title-deciding season finale with his ninth career victory at Martinsville Speedway. 

The incident took place in the handicapped parking lot, which was crowded when the 2005 Chevrolet SSR convertible hit a Jeep it was attempting to pass along, with many nearby pedestrians, WDBJ reported. 

The driver of the car was taken into custody, and is being interviewed by police.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. 

The scene has since been cleared.
