Search to resume for three missing in Ohio River

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A fire chief says crews plan to resume the search in Kentucky for three people who remain missing after the pontoon boat they were riding in hit a barge and capsized in the Ohio River.

Louisville Fire Chief Greg Frederick said the recovery effort would resume mid-morning Monday, but would be challenging due to river conditions that include swift currents carrying lots of debris.

Frederick said there were nine people total aboard the boat when it capsized Saturday night. One adult and one child died after the accident and four others, including three children wearing life jackets, were rescued. He said one of those still missing is a child.

CBS affiliate WLKY in Louisville reports the two who died are 52-year-old Donald Swinney and his 14-year-old nephew, Mark Swinney Jr.. Officials said their bodies were recovered minutes after the accident by other boaters.

The three who are unaccounted for are presumed dead, WLKY reports. They are identified as 37-year-old Joyce Shanal Wright, her boyfriend, 36-year-old Danal Swinney, and his 10-year-old daughter.

Frederick said the barge was in a construction site about a mile upstream from the Clark Memorial Bridge.

Frederick said the current of the river was too strong to use divers, and that it contained a lot of debris.

"There are entire trees ... floating down at a rapid rate of speed," he said. "We just don't think it's safe to put divers in."
