Scuffle over borrowing bread ends with infant stabbed, say Fla. cops

AP / CBS

(CBS) - Authorities say a fight over two slices of bread resulted in jail for a Florida woman who stabbed an infant in the head during the scuffle.

The Miami Herald reports that, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, 18-year-old Kenneshia Thurman of Marathon Key was arrested after the incident on Monday. She was jailed and charged with aggravated battery, burglary and violation of probation.

Deputy Becky Herrin says "multiple witnesses" told another deputy that Thurman went to her next-door neighbor's apartment  and asked Justin Rogers and Desanta Carey for bread. When they refused, Thurman got upset, and tried to hold the door open as her neighbors tried to keep her out.

Authorities said Thurman then walked back to her own apartment, returned to Rogers' apartment with a knife, and forced her way inside in an attempt to stab Carey.

Carey was holding her 2-month-old girl and, according to Deputy Herrin, Thurman struck the baby in the head with the knife instead of Carey. The blow caused a small cut to the infant's forehead, which was treated by paramedics at the scene.
