DA: Man shot in Pa. courthouse appears to be White House fence jumper
CHESTER, Pa. -- A man was shot and killed at the Chester County Justice Center in Pennsylvania after stabbing or slashing a sheriff's deputy, reports CBS Philadelphia.
District Attorney Tom Hogan says the suspect is the same man who jumped the White House fence earlier this year.
Officials say Curtis Smith, 35, of Coatesville, was killed by a sheriff's deputy, after he allegedly attacked another deputy.
During a press conference the, Hogan said Smith tried to enter the Justice Center with a knife and was shot twice by two officers. He died from his injuries.
One officer received minor injuries and was transported to Paoli Hospital. CBS Philly reports that the victim is being treated for wounds to his hand and arm.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in D.C., Smith was arrested near the White House on March 1, 2015. He was charged with unlawful entry, a misdemeanor that is punishable by up to six months in prison and/or a $1,000 fine.
About a month after the incident, he entered into an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. The agreement called for him to stay away from the White House complex for six months. If he followed that restriction and broke no laws or court orders in that time period, the government agreed to dismiss the case against him.
A follow-up hearing was scheduled for Oct. 9, 2015.
