Report: 10-year-old fan speed reads new Harry Potter in under an hour

LONDON -- Toby L'Estrange, a 10-year-old speed reading prodigy from the United Kingdom, finished both parts of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in 59 minutes, the British news agency Press Association reported.

L'Estrange, whose grandmother Susan Norman is a speed reading expert, was challenged by Amazon to write the first review of the new addition to the Potter series. He downloaded the book to a Kindle as soon as it became available at midnight on Sunday.

He can read an average 400-page book in under 2 hours, Press Association reported.

"When I first started it was really difficult to know what was happening because everything was mixed up," L'Estrange said, "but then it all got quite exciting - and a bit (a bit!) clearer."

L'Estrange, a big fan of the Harry Potter books, said he could recite all the spells used in the stories by heart.

Though he said the book was a "really good story," he only gave it a 6 out of 10.

"It's a very complicated story. It happens in different times, so it's really helpful if you know all the other books and characters quite well (I do - and so does any other true Harry Potter fan)," L'Estrange told the Press Association.

Five years after Harry Potter last worked his magic at the box office, he's back in the new book (and play): "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."

Fans in Manhattan waited hours for the weekend book-release, CBS News' Demarco Morgan reports.

"I've always wanted to know what happens to Harry in the future and not everyone can travel to London to see the play, so the book is the next best option," said one anxious fan.

Kimmy Meyer is now 31 years old, and she said she has been reading the books since she was 12.

"It's like part of our childhood and continues to be part of our childhood," she said.

Author J.K. Rowling said, "It feels wonderful. It has been quite a long time, obviously, since I've been to a Potter opening night or a premiere, so I'm having slight flashbacks."

The book and play feature Harry Potter, all grown up, as a 37-year-old father of three.
