President at a crossroads

What the President did yesterday was to redraw a strategy of how the US confronts terrorism. This speech has been a long time coming. He said that we are at a "crossroads." I think that what we have to keep in mind here is that just saying a war is over doesn't mean a war is over. You can declare the start of a war but you cannot declare the end of a war. The war on terrorism will be over when the terrorists stop attacking. As we saw in Boston and as we saw in London Wednesday, terrorists are still out there.

I think that what the President was trying to do was lay out the rationale on two fronts. First, for bringing most of the troops from our large force in Afghanistan home and second, for reordering the rules on how drones are going to be used.

The President began by stating that drones have been effective, but then he said he's going to leave it to the military to carry out the drone program. The CIA has been doing the heavy lifting in controlling the drones but I think that shifting these weapons to the military seems like a good thing to do.

The President did not mean that we are going to stop fighting terrorism; he said that we are going to do it in a different way. We will talk about that this weekend with Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), who is the ranking Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee and also sits on the Intelligence Committee and New York Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to talk about the President's speech, the changing use of drones and an update on that Immigration Bill Schumer has been working on along with some key Republicans like Florida's Marco Rubio.

We will also cover what is going on down in Oklahoma in the wake of the tornado. Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin has been out front all week and she is going to be with us on Sunday.

Also, we are going to have a big panel of weather experts. Are we having more violent weather? What is this all about? We'll talk with Chief Climatologist for Climate Central Dr. Heidi Cullen, TIME Magazine senior editor of science and technology Jeffrey Kluger, David Bernard, who is theChief Meteorologist from WFOR, and Marshall Shepherd, President of the American Meteorological Society. They will talk with us about this fascinating stuff especially with hurricane season around the corner.

Plus we will have David Gergen of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Michael Gerson of the Washington Post, who advised Presidents Clinton and Reagan and also President George W. Bush, respectively. We want to get their take on how the White House is handling all these scandals in Washington.
