NEW YORK (CBS/WCBS) A manhunt is underway in the Bronx on Monday night following the savage rape of an elderly woman. The 79-year-old victim was severely injured in the attack and New York police are anxious to stop him before he strikes again.

Police say suspect followed the elderly woman into her building early in the morning and savagely assaulted her outside her building's elevator.

Residents are appalled.

"They should hang him. That's the kind of thing you don't do to an old lady," neighbor Nelson Lopez told CBS affiliate WCBS.

The entire attack in the elevator was caught on surveillance video. According to WCBS, the video is so brutal it sickened even veteran detectives.

According a source, the 79-year-old victim, still hospitalized Monday night, is not doing well.

One neighbor who declined to give his name described her as a sweetheart, a fixture in the neighborhood.

"I know her for many years, always walking around with a little case of books and stuff like that. Very generous person, very nice person," the neighbor said.

Police are satisfied the image they have distributed is very good likeness of the man they want to talk to.

He's 5-foot-7-inches tall and was wearing a black baseball cap, black t-shirt with a white design on the rear, dark jeans and dark shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-8477.
