"Pan's Labyrinth" being adapted as a stage musical

Guillermo del Toro is adapting his 2006 fantasy film "Pan's Labyrinth" into a stage musical.

Deadline reports that the director has been quietly working on the project for four years. The stage version has a book written by del Toro and Jeremy Ungar, and Oscar-winner Paul Williams has signed on to write the lyrics. Gustavo Santaolalla, who won Oscars for composing the scores for "Brokeback Mountain" and "Babel," is set to write the music.

Del Toro, Gary Ungar and London-based Robert Fox are producing the project, Deadline added.

Del Toro received an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of "Pan's Labyrinth." The Spanish-language film is about the young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer who escapes into a fantasy world in 1944 fascist Spain.

The director is scheduled to return to theaters this summer, with the monsters-versus-robots film "Pacific Rim."
