NY police investigate woman's decapitation, man's train death

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Police are investigating a possible link between a woman found decapitated outside a Farmingdale, N.Y. apartment building and a man struck by a train at a nearby station, WCBS 880 reports.

Just before 8 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a report that the body of a woman in her 60s was found on the pavement just outside an apartment building.

A witness told 48 Hours' Crimesider he saw the woman was decapitated, with her head nearby.

Witness Jack Imperial was in a cab heading to Queens after exiting the Long Island Railroad when he and the driver saw the gruesome sight.

"My driver got startled and pointed and there was a head, and I looked to the left and there was a body," Imperial told Crimesider. "It looked unreal, it looked staged, no one was freaking out or anything. I was hoping it may have been a Halloween prank."

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., police got a call that a Long Island Rail Road train had struck and killed a man in his 30s.

He died less than one-quarter of a mile away from where the woman's body was found.

The two deaths appear to be a murder-suicide, possibly involving a mother and son, WCBS 880 reports.

At the site of the murder, neighbors were shaken as they waited for answers.

"It's insane," one neighbor said. "You never think something like that's going to happen right outside your doorstep."

Police said both the man and the woman are from Farmingdale. Their names have not been released.
