New Terrence Malick film to debut at Berlin festival

BERLIN - New films from Terrence Malick and British director Peter Greenaway are among the first movies chosen to screen at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.

Malick's "Knight of Cups," starring Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman, will have its world premiere in the event's competition, festival organizers said on Monday.

According to The Hollywood Reporter
, the film is "a story of a man, temptations, celebrity and excess" set against the backdrop of the movie business.

Malick's "The Thin Red Line" won the festival's top prize in 1999. His most recent films were his critically-lauded "The Tree of Life," and "To the Wonder."

Also in Berlin for a world premiere is Greenaway ("The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover," "Prospero's Books"), who brings his new movie, "Eisenstein in Guanajuato," to the festival. It's about Russian director Sergei Eisenstein and the time he spent in Mexico on his ill-fated production of "Que Viva Mexico."

Other entries include "As We Were Dreaming" from German director Andreas Dresen, who has won the festival twice before; "45 Years," from Andrew Haigh of the U.K., starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtney; "Under Electric Clouds," from Alexei German ("Hard to Be a God"); and a directorial debut from Jayro Bustamante of Guatemala, "Ixcanul Volcano,"

Kenneth Branagh's Disney fantasy "Cinderella," starring Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Madden and Lily James as Cinderella, will have its international premiere out-of-competition.

More entries will be announced in the coming weeks.

The 65th Berlinale, which runs Feb. 5-15, is the first of the year's major European film festivals.

Director Darren Aronofsky ("Noah") will head the jury that chooses winners of its Golden Bear award and other honors.
