Neighbor indicted in murder of N.C. guidance counselor

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. - A man accused of strangling a North Carolina guidance counselor to death in her apartment late last month has been indicted on charges of murder, first-degree sex offense and kidnapping, reports CBS affiliate WBTV.

Sharman Howard Odom, 34, was arrested earlier this month and charged with murder in the death of 31-year-old Maggie Daniels, who was found dead in her Newton apartment on June 28. Odom lived in the same building as Daniels and police have said they believe he attacked her in her unlocked apartment.

Investigators previously said a clump of hair missing from Odom helped them close in on him as a suspect. Newton Police Chief Donald Brown also said that a selfie taken by Odom on the day the victim died showed him with a fresh scratch on his face and that gave officers confidence he was the killer.

Odom is currently being held in the Catawba County Detention Facility without bond.
