N.C. shooting rampage death toll rises to 4 as second son dies

(CBS/AP) GREENSBORO, N.C. - A North Carolina woman's weekend shooting rampage has claimed the life of her second son, raising the death toll to four, law enforcement authorities said Tuesday.

Zachary Lee Smith, 14, died late Monday after being shot by his mother, the Guilford County Sheriff's office said.

Authorities say 36-year-old Mary Ann Holder killed herself after shooting her two sons and three other children in the head Sunday. The sheriff's department says Holder's nephew and her older son's girlfriend remained in critical condition.

Holder's shooting spree inside her home in the Pleasant Garden community south of Greensboro initially took the life of her older son, 17-year-old Robert Dylan Smith, and Holder's niece, Hannaleigh Suttles, 8. Robert Smith's girlfriend, Makayla Woods, 15, and Holder's nephew, Richard Suttles, 17, were also shot and were in critical condition Tuesday.

Authorities say the rampage began when Holder confronted her boyfriend, Randal Scott Lamb, just before 9 a.m. and shot him in the shoulder. An hour later, deputies found Holder in her SUV where she had fatally shot herself. Police found Zachary Smith in the backseat alive but mortally wounded with a gunshot wound to the head.

Lamb, 40, is in stable condition.

According to CBS affiliate WFMY, police said that Lamb and Holder had once had an affair and that the relationship led to a lawsuit, including allegations of alienation of affection.

Holder left behind two notes admitting to the shootings and apologizing for her actions, police said.
