Miami-Dade Police said they are questioning a male student in custody, but did not release his age. It's unclear what prompted the shooting inside the Somerset Academy Silver Palms bus in Homestead, south of Miami.

The victim's condition was not known.

Concerned parents gathered at the scene, which was cordoned off by crime scene tape. It's unclear how many students were on the bus at the time of the shooting.

School officials say the principal walked to each classroom to check on students after learning about the shooting and that everything was fine. Grief counselors were on their way to the charter school.

According to CBS Miami, a spokeswoman for Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools said she has not been able to confirm that the girl was a student at Somerset Silver Palms. The bus was also taking students to two other schools.
