Meteor Lights Up Night Sky Over Oklahoma

A meteor streaked across the night sky over Oklahoma on Tuesday, prompting lots of bewildered residents to phone their local police and ask about the unidentified flying object.

The Sebastian County Sheriff's Office told CBS News affiliate KTHV it was a meteor and likely hit near Poteau Mountain, Oklahoma.

Amateur astronomer and blogger Steven Meeks told KTHV it was likely no bigger than a pebble, and may well have contained copper as a number of witnesses reported the light having a greenish hue.

There were also reported sightings of the ball of fire ranging from the Florida Panhandle to several locations in Mississippi.

TheWeatherSpace.com says the meteor came from the southeast and travelled northwest, and was emerald green with a red-yellow tail.
