Marijuana Growing In National Forests
Smokey the Bear may soon be living up to his namesake.
CNN is reporting that drug cartels are getting around tougher border controls by mass-producing marijuana right here at home. They hide their sophisticated farms, complete with irrigation systems, under the green canopy of California's national forests.
According to CNN, 5.2 million plants worth a total of about $15.6 billion were seized last year, 70 percent of them from public lands
Guards armed with assault rifles have previously engaged in shootouts with law enforcement officers, the network says. So far, no civilians have been hurt.
