Mac App Store surpasses 1 million downloads

Apple

(CBS) - Apple announced that the Mac App Store has sold over 100 million apps in under a year.

The online software store was launched on Jan. 6 for users who are running Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or higher. Mac users can download anything from free apps like Evernote to AutoDesk's AutoCad LT for $900. Earlier this year, Apple used the Mac App Store to release OS X 10.7 (Lion)

"With thousands of free and paid apps, the Mac App Store brings the App Store experience to the Mac so you can find great new apps, buy them using your iTunes account, and download and install them in just one step," a statement released by Apple said today.

The Mac App Store's success follows in the footsteps of the App Store for iOS devices, which has reached over 18 billion downloads.

Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phillip Schiller said in a statement, "With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac App Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world."
