Keeping A New Year's Resolution
This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.
I've made good on at least one of my New Year's resolutions: I rode my bike to work this morning.
When my wife asked me in December what I wanted for Christmas, I said, "How about one of those little bikes — you know, the ones that collapse and can fit in the trunk of a car."
Well, lo and behold, there was a bicycle with a bow on it under our tree this year
It's interesting how things come full circle. Years ago, when I did a radio show in Denver, I led a campaign to get people to use public transportation and ride their bikes to work. The motivation then was to lower air pollution.
Now, 30 years later, I'm thinking that if I get on the radio and rant about gas guzzlers and global warming, I'd better start doing a better job of using less fossil fuel.
So today was my first day. I whisked through Central Park, the half-moon bright in the sky. It was exhilarating, to say the least — and with my heart racing, I pulled into work. With a start like this, who needs coffee?
