Katie Couric's Notebook: Caring For Our Parents
Video: Americans are living longer than ever, and that means more of us are helping care for our parents...often while taking care of our kids, and working.
If you're not going through this, you almost certainly know someone who is.
Our series this week looked at these challenges. One is financial: There are 75 million baby boomers; about one-third are helping their parents financially. Just 53 percent of all seniors' healthcare costs are covered, often leaving children with the financial burden.
The emotional challenges may be more daunting. Over half of all Americans say they worry about caring for aging parents. Navigating Medicare and medical options is mind-numbing.
It can be overwhelming to have to make healthcare decisions for someone you love.
Our parents always taught US to tell the truth. Perhaps it's time for an honest discussion with THEM about their plans as they age. It's the least we can do.
