(CBS News) When Justin Bieber finished high school earlier this month, the pop star didn't get to participate in a traditional graduation ceremony like most teens.

So, Ellen DeGeneres took it upon herself to fix that - surprising him with a faux commencement ceremony on her show Wednesday. (Watch the video below.)

On "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," Bieber put on a cap and gown and sat by as DeGeneres stood at an "Ellen Academy" podium.

"We're here to honor the accomplishments of the Biebs. A great American who happens to be from Canada," DeGeneres joked in her graduation speech. "Justin, you've finally made it. You're graduating and I'm so proud of you, because I've always said there ain't nothing more better than an education."

She also gave the 18-year-old star some words of advice, along with a wardrobe suggestion.

"So now that you're graduating, you're gonna have to be able to survive on your own," DeGeneres continued. "You're going to need a strong character, a good business sense and you're gonna need suspenders - honestly, your pants have to be pulled up at some point."
