(CBS News) ABC's new comedy "Don't Trust the B----  in Apartment 23" premiered Wednesday night, with James Van Der Beek playing a version himself still living off fame from his hit TV show "Dawson's Creek."

Van Der Beek plays an over-the-top version of himself who sleeps with "Dawson's Creek" fans, endorses a Korean energy drink and is about to join the cast of "Dancing with the Stars."

"I love doing it," the actor told Entertainment Weekly of playing himself on the show. "I love the ego assassination that comes with it. It's just so healthy and so good for me."

Aside from Van Der Beek and the many "Dawson's Creek" references, the show is centered on the story of a girl who moves from her small town to New York City, where a crazy roommate awaits her.

June (Dreama Walker) moves to New York for her dream job only to find out on her first day that the company is going under for embezzlement. She is forced to get a job at a coffee shop and find a new apartment. Her roommate Chloe (Krysten Ritter) seems great at first until she has sex with June's boyfriend on her birthday cake.

So where does the former Dawson Creek star fit in? Van Der Beek plays Chloe's best friend.
