(CBS/KPHO/AP) PHOENIX - A jury has sentenced a man to death in the 2007 rape and murder of 19-year-old Arizona woman Jacqueline "Jackie" Hartman, who he killed on their first date.

The Maricopa County Superior Court jury returned its sentence Monday against 29-year-old Jonathan Burns. He was previously found guilty of first-degree murder, sexual assault, kidnapping and weapons misconduct in the death of Hartman.

Judge Karen O'Connor also sentenced Burns to 28 years for sexual assault, 28 years for kidnapping and 12 years for misconduct involving weapons.

Prosecutors say Burns raped and fatally shot Hartman, a nursing student, on their first date on Jan. 28, 2007.

According to CBS affiliate KPHO, it was nearly a month before police found Hartman's body buried in the desert near Fountain Hills. Police say her purse, sandals, bra and panties were found in a trash bin near Burns' home.

According to court documents obtained by KPHO, Burns told police he had sex with Hartman and dropped her off at home around 5 a.m.

But police said Burns' couldn't account for his whereabouts for about five hours.

Burns had previously spent seven years in prison in Arizona for burglary, arson and other offenses, court documents revealed.
