(CBS/AP) BALTIMORE - Police say a mother stabbed her infant daughter in the chest and neck Tuesday at a social services building in East Baltimore.

According to CBS Baltimore, police say the mother was with her daughter at a social services visit when all of a sudden she became irate. She then pulled out a long kitchen knife and started stabbing her baby in the neck and upper body.

The 8-month-old baby is now listed in stable condition and the mother is in custody.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the stabbing occurred just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Department spokesman Det. Donny Moses says the woman will likely be taken for a mental health evaluation.

Detectives and child abuse investigators are continuing to investigate.

Pat Hines, a spokesman for the state Department of Human Resources, says the department hopes the child will be OK but declined further comment because of an ongoing police investigation.
