LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) Wouldn't it be nice if CBS had a replacement for Charlie Sheen to offer audiences and advertisers when it previews the coming season at the upfronts next week in New York?

According to sources familiar with the situation, British film actor Hugh Grant has been in negotiations to join "Two and a Half Men' as its new leading man.

The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because producer Warner Bros. and CBS hadn't authorized public comment, said the talks had stalled without resolution.

It was unclear whether Grant's hiring was a closed issue, the person said. Reports that Grant had been offered $1 million an episode were inaccurate, the person said, adding any replacement for the fired Charlie Sheen would be paid less than that.

Sheen was among TV's highest-paid actors at a reported $1.8 million an episode.

The 50-year-old Grant has starred in such big-screen hits as "Notting Hill," "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Bridget Jones' Diary" and "Love Actually."

Grant's publicist did not immediately return a call for comment.

The Grant-''Two and a Half Men'' negotiations were first reported by the Deadline Hollywood website.
