How to wish Logan Pearson a happy birthday

Eleven-year-old boys are usually loud, but not Logan Pearson. He communicates with a kiss or a touch of our camera.

Logan can't talk. He is severely autistic, and finding the right way to celebrate his birthday has always posed a particular problem for his Massachusetts family.

"People have just felt like, well, 'Logan can't understand, so we aren't going to do anything for him like other kids,"' Logan’s dad told David Wade of CBS Boston station WBZ.

This year, for Logan's 12th birthday his mom, Catherine Pearson, reached out for help through social media.

In a post on Facebook, she wrote, “This year, I want to stop feeling down-right upset ... I want to celebrate him and enjoy his day.”

She asked for people to send Logan birthday cards.  As the story spread, letters came in from all over the world.

“I went to the mailbox. I called my husband and said, 'You're not going to believe this,"' Pearson said.

So far, Logan has received more than 2,000 cards from places as exotic as Tanzania and senders as famous as Elmo.

"The world is giving this kid a hug,” said Catherine Pearson. “And saying ‘you count,’ and we're here for your birthday."
