Houston Chronicle Beats Out Big Names In Blogging Review

Over at PressThink, NYU professor Jay Rosen announces the launch of his Blue Plate Special section, run by students of Rosen's Blogging 101 course. The first "special" looks at blogs run by newspaper organizations:

Fifteen undergraduates in journalism, two grad students, and one professor set out to determine--by our lights-- the top blogging newspapers in the U.S. among major dailies. We found six standouts, two honorable mentions and some wacky blogs. Number One in our eyes: the Houston Chronicle. By a mile.
The team used a point system, which worked as follows:
Five Blue Plates, working closely together, examined the blogging sections of all 100 largest newspapers, and narrowed the list to 20 nominees for "top" performer. We knew in a general way what we were looking for: very user friendly, high quality content (writing, editing and images) and a grasp of blogging, a sense of ease with the form.
Check out the Special for all the criteria and methods used, but for now, here are the top five:
  • 1. Houston Chronicle
  • 2. The Washington Post
  • 3. USA Today
  • 4. St. Petersburg Times
  • 5. Atlanta Journal Constitution
