Headless torso found in south Alabama

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. - Sheriff's investigators in south Alabama worked into the night Monday probing the death of a person whose hand, arm and headless torso were found dumped near Magnolia Springs.

The torso was found south of Magnolia Springs with no visible clothing, Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Mack said. A local resident taking a walk saw the torso in the creek and called authorities. On Sunday, investigators found a severed hand and a piece of an arm in Magnolia Springs.

Mack has said the only identifying detail of the remains that have been found so far is a ring that was on the severed hand investigators recovered over the weekend.

CBS affiliate WKRG reports the victim is an adult white male.

The headless torso was partially submerged in water beneath the Weeks Creek Bridge, roughly three miles east of where the arm and hand were recovered, Mack said. Investigators spent part of Monday night searching County Road 26 south of Magnolia Springs for more body parts.

"This is a homicide. We have no reason to expect anything else at this time," Al.com quoted Mack as saying. "More than likely it will be a capital murder investigation based on circumstances."

Mack said investigators believe the person was killed within the past 72 hours. Investigators were planning on scouring the area near where the torso was recovered to look for more clues.
