Handcuffed, shackled inmate escapes from police van

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Authorities in suburban Phoenix say a handcuffed and shackled inmate was seriously injured after he kicked out a window in a police transport van on a freeway and jumped out of the moving vehicle.

Gilbert police Sgt. Jesse Sanger says Adam Arlington broke out of a city police van bringing him to the Maricopa County jail in downtown Phoenix about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police say the 31-year-old leaped from the van's passenger's side window and ran across Interstate 10 before being recaptured.

Sanger says Arlington suffered a head injury and was taken to a Phoenix hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

Arlington was in custody on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and was going to be booked into jail after he was unable to post bond.
