Greece: Poll sees strong support for euro, despite crisis

ATHENS, Greece - Nearly three-quarters of Greeks support remaining in the euro, while a majority back major concessions in negotiations with bailout lenders to break the deadlock in talks, according to an opinion poll.

The Alco survey for news website Newsit found 74 percent backed the euro, while 18 percent prefer a return to a national currency. It found 50 percent supporting major concessions, with 41 percent opposed.

The poll comes a day after Greece opted to bundle four payments due this month to the International Monetary Fund totaling 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) into a single repayment on June 30. The move prompted widespread losses across European stock markets Friday.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is set to address an emergency session of parliament later amid growing discontent within his left-wing Syriza party.
