"Grace of Monaco" becoming a Lifetime movie

"Grace of Monaco," which had a glitzy premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival, is now getting another premiere on Lifetime.

The Nicole Kidman-starring Grace Kelly biopic, originally intended for theatrical release, will make its U.S. debut on the cable network next month.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Weinstein Company, which purchased the U.S. distribution rights to the film, decided to sell the project to Lifetime rather than run it in theaters after it performed poorly in its international engagements. It was originally slated to open in November 2013 but was pushed to March 2014 and then pulled off the schedule again, amid clashes between Harvey Weinstein and director Olivier Dahan over the film.

Monaco's royal family spoke out against the movie last year, saying it presented a glamorized and inaccurate view of the late princess' life.

"Grace of Monaco," also starring Tim Roth, Frank Langella, Parker Posey and Paz Vega, will premiere on Lifetime on May 25 (Memorial Day), at 8 p.m. ET.
