Georgia mom charged with murdering daughter, 3

ATLANTA - Meriel Bemis, a Georgia mother, is charged with murder in the death of her 3-year-old daughter, reports CBS Atlanta.

Authorities responded to a home in DeKalb County around 11:30 p.m. Sunday and found the child, identified as Lela Bemis, unresponsive in the bathroom.

Detectives determined the child was at the home alone with her mother, 21-year-old Meriel Bemis, at the time the incident occurred, reports the station.

Meriel Bemis' boyfriend reportedly returned to the home, discovered the child not breathing and unresponsive and called police.

Meriel Bemis was taken into custody early Monday.

"The exact nature of the child's death, the manner in which she died, we are not disclosing at this time," said DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish, according to CBS Atlanta. "There are a number of factors that our detectives still need to investigate. They are also still waiting on autopsy reports."
