Gabrielle Giffords "Continues to Improve" Daily, Says Husband Mark Kelly

Mark Kelly said on Thursday that the health of his wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, "continues to improve" daily, and that doctors had told him her progress was "a great sign."

In remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, Kelly said Giffords, who was shot in the head during a tragic mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, last month, "gets a little bit better" every day.

"The neurosurgeons and neurologists tell me it's a great sign," he said. "The slope of that curve is very important."

Acknowledging that the weeks following his wife's shooting had been "the hardest of my life," Kelly urged Americans to help make "something good come of all this."

"The last month has been the hardest of my life and the hardest time of my family's life," Kelly said. "We're not the only ones... The shooting has cost other families dearly. Gabby's community in Tucson, my community in Tucson, the people of Tucson are suffering deeply - but suffering together."

Kelly, adding that it was only recently that he had become a "big believer in fate," expressed his hope that the tragedy would somehow contribute to a greater good in the future.

"I can only hope - and I told Gabby the other night - that maybe it's possible that this is just one small part of that same plan. That this event, horrible and tragic, was not merely random. That maybe something good can come from this."

Citing the words of his twin brother Scott (like Kelly, an astronaut), he urged Americans to "work better together."

"I know we'll do better," Kelly said.
