(CBS/AP) LAKE WALES, Fla. - A 42-year-old Florida woman is accused of chaining her 7-year-old son and repeatedly stabbing him.

According to CBS Tampa, Maisa Alvarez was arrested and booked into Polk County Jail Tuesday on charges of attempted murder and aggravated child abuse.

Lake Wales police told CBS affiliate WTSP that just after 8 a.m. Maisa Alvarez chained her son's hands together. When the boy woke up, officers say she stabbed him eight to 10 times in the chest. Police say Alvarez then called 911.

The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, where he is in stable condition. Police say none of the wounds he sustained are life threatening.

Officers say Alvarez didn't offer any explanation or motive, WTSP reports. Police told the station that Alvarez has no criminal history and they've never been called to their house before.

"It's very unusual. It's very scary to think that it could go from nothing to that," said Lake Wales Police Deputy Chief Troy Schulze.

Alvarez is being held without bail.
