Fla. man accused off killing 2-year-old says she fell down stairs

(CBS) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A Daytona Beach man who has been charged with aggravated manslaughter for fatally injuring his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter says she just fell down the stairs, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Phillip William Harrison, 24, reportedly told police that he'd gone to the front door to answer what he thought was a knock on Wednesday afternoon. He then heard a noise in the stairwell, and when he went to look, he found Gabriella Sorey at the bottom of the stairs, not breathing.

But the Sentinel reports that the autopsy found trauma "not consistent with injuries from a fall," including blunt trauma, six broken ribs, punctured lungs, a lacerated kidney, spleen and liver. She also had cuts on her mouth.

Harrison reportedly told police he disciplined the child for soiling her diaper but "did not spank her that hard."
