Watch the first trailer for the new "Ben-Hur"

Audiences can finally catch a glimpse of Hollywood's latest take on "Ben-Hur," starring former "Boardwalk Empire" fan favorite Jack Huston in the role made famous by Charlton Heston.

The first trailer for the summer release features some impressive shipwrecks, battles and -- of course -- deadly chariot races. It also incorporates a good deal of exposition by co-star Morgan Freeman. Here's the official synopsis:

"'Ben-Hur' is the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption."

"Ben-Hur" hits theaters August 12, 2016.
