Family: Man died trying to prevent friend from driving drunk

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. - The family of a 19-year-old South Florida man who was killed in a fatal crash says he died while trying to stop a friend from driving drunk, reports CBS Miami.

The family of Joseph Ianzano says the accident early Saturday morning happened after Ianzano drove some friends back to his house in Coconut Creek following a concert. Ianzano reportedly thought his friend was too drunk to drive home.

"He blocked the car with his car so that he couldn't get out because the car was parked in front of his house anyway," said Barbara Ianzano, Joseph's grandmother. "He got around the car and Joey ran after him and grabbed onto the spoiler trying to stop him yelling, screaming."

Police said the driver sped off with the 19-year-old still hanging onto the back of the car. About half-a-block away, the car slammed into a tree, killing the young man, reports CBS Miami.

Police say the crash is under investigation and driver of the car has not been charged.

Ianzano's grandmother said she isn't sure if any good would come out of charging the driver, who was a close family friend.

A vigil for Joseph Ianzano, who was reportedly just days away from starting school to become a firefighter, was held Monday.
