Expanded Weekend News

The CBS TV Network has planned expanded coverage throughout the Labor Day weekend of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the crisis in New Orleans.

News programs on all three days will be updating viewers on the disaster.

Here is a look at what is planned:

Friday, Sept. 2


  • CBS Evening News with Bob Schieffer has expanded its newscast to one hour to cover the latest news from the Gulf Coast. Check local listings for times.
  • 60 Minutes II will open with a report from correspondent Dan Rather and feature updates from correspondents in the field. 8 p.m. ET/PT

Saturday, Sept. 3

  • The Saturday Early Show will feature the latest news from correspondents stationed throughout the hardest-hit areas.
  • CBS Evening News will have the latest news from correspondents in the field. Check local listings for times.

Sunday, Sept. 4

  • Sunday Morning will have a cover story on the aftermath in addition to reports from Harry Smith in New Orleans and Bill Whitaker in Mississippi. There will be segments on the history of New Orleans, the Army Corps of Engineers that has responsibility for the levees and the gas crunch which was worsened by the storm. 9 a.m. ET/PT.
  • CBS Evening News will have the latest news from correspondents in the field. Check local listings for times.
  • 60 Minutes will begin with a report from New Orleans by correspondent Scott Pelley on the levee system and the Army Corps of Engineers, which maintains it. Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT

Monday, Sept. 5

  • The Early Show will have the latest reports from the correspondents in the field and interviews with some of the people responsible for the relief efforts. 7 a.m. ET/PT.
  • CBS Evening News with Bob Schieffer will have the latest news from correspondents in the hurricane-damaged areas. Check local listings for times.
