Emmy Awards 2016: Sarah Paulson wins first Emmy after five years of nominations
Sarah Paulson finally broke her Emmys losing streak after five years of nominations.
Paulson was up for two awards on Sunday, and she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Marcia Clark in “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” She was also up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in “American Horror Story: Hotel,” but that Emmy went to Regina King for “American Crime.”
Paulson seemed very grateful when she took the stage; she had been nominated for four Emmys in past years, including for her role as a set of conjoined twins on “American Horror Story: Freak Show.”
She told her partner Holland Taylor “I love you” and said to Ryan Murphy, “You changed my life,” but perhaps the most moving part of her speech was when she made a special shoutout to her date for the night, the real-life Marcia Clark.
“The responsibility of playing a real person is an enormous one,” she said. “You want to get it right, not for you but for them. And the more I learned about the real Marcia Clark, not the two-dimensional cardboard cutout I saw on the news but the complicated, whip-smart, giant-hearted mother of two who woke up every day, put both feet on the floor and dedicated herself to righting an unconscionable wrong, the loss of two innocents -- Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown -- the more I had to recognize that I, along with the rest of the world, had been superficial and careless in my judgment. I’m glad to be able to stand here today in front of everyone and tell you I’m sorry.”
The camera panned to Clark, who sat in the audience looking very emotional. Paulson has spoken before about getting to know Clark very well for her role.
